For an internationally renowned Liver Transplant surgeon, Dr. Subhash Gupta, complex cases of liver diseases or disorders are not very rare. However, a very recent case handled by this expert surgeon, left not just the hospital staff but the entire city of Delhi in sheer astonishment.
Razaur Rehman a 54-year-old man from Mumbai, suffered from some major complications and ailments a decade ago. The doctors had diagnosed dilated blood vessels in his esophagus through the procedure of endoscopy. Mr. Rehman underwent a long treatment for the same in Mumbai itself and came out of the critical condition.
To his misfortune, in December 2018, he started experiencing unusual weakness that kept him from doing even the basic activities. His family got him admitted in Max Super Specialty hospital, Mumbai.
After several tests, it was found out that Mr. Razaur was suffering from a chronic kidney disease and portal hypertension. Both of the conditions had put the patient in a critical state and had damaged his liver too. The doctors revealed it to the family that Mr. Razaur was suffering from kidney and liver failure due to long term effects of hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Combined liver transplant and kidney transplant both was the only escape from the dreadful condition of Mr. Reheman. Dr. Subhash Gupta, foremost liver transplant surgeon and the director chairman of Liver and Biliary sciences at Max center Delhi, took the perilous case under his expertise.
Dr. Subhash Gupta and team of doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mumbai, shared the need of liver and kidney for Mr. Razaur to the family. Son and wife of the patient wanted to volunteer for the same. After few tests the doctors declared them fit for the transplant.
Finally, in April, 2019, Mr. Razaur Reheman underwent a daylong 24 hours transplant under the expertise of Dr. Subhash Gupta and his team. No complications were experienced during the surgery and was completed successfully despite of it being an extremely risky case.
Son Shanur Reheman (25) was the donor who donated a part of his liver (it being a regenerative organ) and wife Kishwer Nishat (46) donated one of her kidney. “We just wanted to see him healthy again.” Were the words of the son.
Upon taking statement from Dr. Subhash Gupta, the eminent surgeon said “There are only few critical cases of liver diseases that require transplant or else conventional methods are enough to treat any disorder of the liver. Thus it is very much essential for the patient to take right type of treatment at the right time and be true to its demands. In case of Mr. Razaur, As a result of this his damaged liver started being impactful on other organs like kidney. If right measures are not taken with time the ill state of liver can hamper the functioning of heart and brain and result into their failure too.”
